Default Shepherds Bush Empire, 23-04-08

I wasn't gonna bother doing a review this time but what the hell. The day involved a lot of travelling for me and Saxon chick but the day went surprisingly well for a change.

We left Manchester on the 10.15 train which arrived in London pretty much on time. A short walk to the tube station and a couple of minutes wait for the tube train and it was off to London Bridge train station. As we got to the platform our train came in and it was off to Eltham. Got off the train, walked to the bus stop and our bus came! We dropped our gear off at my brothers flat and had a bite to eat and it was time to head off back into central London. We started walking to the train station but a bus came as we reached one of the bus stops so we jumped on that to get us to the train station quicker. As we got off the bus the train was just coming into the platform so it was straight on the train! Got off that train at Charing Cross and straight on a tube train to Hammersmith via Piccadilly Circle, and before we knew it we were at Hammersmith. With all the trains, tubes and buses we caught that day we probably waited for no more than 5 minutes in total! Ahh this was going to be a good day........

The pub was was very close to the tube station so we found it with no problems. We tried to get our tickets for the Motorhead/Saxon gig at the Hammersmith Odeon (yes I know it isn't called the odeon anymore but anyone from my era will always call it the Hammersmith Odeon!) but the ticket office wasn't open. So it was off to the pub where Fingers, Huw, Philthy Phil and Bill were already supping away.

St Fingers!

Philthy Phil, with Goss's Polish friend Pawel in the background (Thanks Saxonator!).

It wasn't long before we were joined by various members of the forum posse, and before we knew it we had taken over a corner of the pub!

Metal dude and Elin.

Goss and Midnightrider joined by a non forum member, but everyone is welcome to the Saxon family!

Not many people can dress up as St George and carry it off. Got no idea why Fingers thought he could! lmao! Only joking mate, you brought a smile to everyones face, good on ya for getting in the spirit of it. A bombardier cheers to St Fingers!

Me getting presented with my 'forum member of the year' sash. lol.

Is it me or does Philthy Phil look more Swedish than Metal Dude? lol.

For anyone who hasn't been in the William Morris pub in Hammersmith, I thoroughly recommend it. Obviously very handy for any Hammersmith gigs but also good for any Shepherd Bush gigs as it is not far away from there either. A great pub with a good atmosphere, cheap beer (especially if you have a shed load of vouchers! lol), it's an ideal meeting place. Cheers to Goss for suggesting this pub.

"Hey Fingers, I just felt our baby kick".

Saxonized plays his 'Guess which hand the Guiness is in' game and loses again!

Cheers Midnightrider!

I don't know what Saxonized said but it tickled Northernlady!

Think we all had a great time in the William Morris pub, me and Saxon chick certainly did. There was a great atmosphere and it was good to be all together. It was suggested we head towards Shepherds Bush so we left the William Morris.

The crusade begins. The fearless Saxon warriors mingle with the shoppers of Hammersmith on their way to the holy grail that is Shepherd Bush.

All hail Biff, the metal king! The saracen heathen in the green hoody steps aside, he knows when he is beaten!

We are strong...........in numbers. The crusade continues.

Strong arm of the law.

You can feel the tension in the air as the crusade gets ever closer to Shepherds Bush.

Oh sod this for a laugh, lets have 'more beer'. All this crusading in thirsty work!

Goss demonstrates the secret hand shake needed to enter this pub!

The actual gig has already been discussed elsewhere on this forum so I won't go into details. The setlist for anyone who hasn't seen it was -

Intro - Jurusalem
1.Princess of the night
2.Let me feel your power
3.The return/Lionheart
4.never surrender
5.Iron wheels
6.English man o war
7.The thin red line
8.Witchfinder general
9.Sixth form girls
10.Medley (Warrior,Battle cry,Man and machine)
11.I got to rock
12.Athila the hun
13.And the bands played on
14.Power and the glory

Encore 1

15.State of grace
16.747
17.Denim and leather/Ashes to ashes

Encore 2

18. Crusader
(Thanks to Metal dude for the setlist).

There were good and bad points. Bad points mainly being the dickheads in the crowd. Also couldn't believe that there wasn't a one off t shirt like there was for the Sheffield gig. They would have sold like hotcakes, so it would have been good for Saxons coffers.

I don't know why but the gig just seemed to go by in a blur. No sooner had it started then it was finishing! Thought it was great that they played Jurusalem as the intro, certainly a rousing start. That song should definitely be the English national anthem. Was nice to hear Iron Wheels in the setlist again. But the icing on the cake had to be Sixth Form Girls. I don't think I have ever heard that live, and I'm pretty sure Biff said they have never played it live before.

And then it was goodbye. Some of the posse went round the back to wait for the band but me and Saxon chick headed off home. Another great gig but for me what makes the night special is meeting up with the forum members. Well not just the forum members but anyone who wants to come and join us! But of course meeting up with the 'usual suspects' - Fingers, Huw, Saxonator & Northern Lady, Goss, Metal dude, Saxon1963, Midnightrider, Saxonized, Philthy Phil & Bill, (not forgetting Saxon chick of course, but I kind of see her everyday anyway! lol). And meeting new faces for the first time like Elin and Bosnian Witchfinder, and others I didn't catch the names of (or I have forgotton due to old age!). There were some faces missing like Heathen, Saxonfan, and Tim & Debs, Saxonmckenz, but they were with us in spirit and hopefully in person next time.

It was a pleasure to meet you all, can't wait for the next time. Heres to the Saxon family.
