I would say both equally as good; Battering ram I only heard once and Speed of light I heard twice, yesterday.
Iron Maiden is my favourite heavy metal band and I expect most other songs on the album The book of souls to be better than the first single.
On previous Maiden-albums I also thought the first singles were good, but not as good as most of the album tracks.

50/50 on these at the moment as have only heard them on the pc so don't get the full depth of sound.

Speed of light is typical average Maiden of late.
Basically a moderately catchy chorus, repetitively hammered in to your brain until you like it with a slightly Metallica sandman riff on the intro and Bruce droning on with filler in between.
It's not too bad and I really like the video but I hope they have a few hidden gems on the album to compensate.

Battering Ram as mentioned elsewhere gets pulled down by the chorus and could have been a cracker if it wasn't for that.

Both are good songs, but I think Saxon's Battering Ram is more aggressive and packs more attitude so it gets my vote!

Also, although a good song, the Maiden track reminds me of a lot of 'Sun and Steel' from their 1983 Piece of Mind album, mixed in with some 'Enter Sandman' for good measure.

However, Maiden's video is excellent, and far better than anything Saxon have the budget for. Far better than a typical 'let's watch the metal band perform their song live'.

For me Saxon's lyrics are better. Saxon lyrics say a lot, have lots content..Few phrases and its totally clear. Where Iron Maiden needs lots words..Saxon Lyric is more efficient..And I feel more feeling in Biff's song.. Evry word he says he stands behind it..as if it is real meant..I had that with Bruce D on the early albums, and after that it became so..'pflichtmaessig' I never believe him when he sings.. some actors in a theatr they can capture me, they are believable.. but some are with their heads not really there.. (I know its subjective, but when Biff sings wheels of steel a million times, he means it..and he does it as if its his first time)
Saxon Battering Ram sounds like a whole, like if it is recorded al 5 together..and the maiden song sounds as if Bruce is on the moon, and the rest of the band on Pluto, Saturnus Mars Venus.. as if they recorded it on different locations.. I like the slowing down in the Saxon song, it doesnt have to be evrytime full gas..that can get boring..For me the Saxon song is better, the sound is better and clearer too.. Dont get me wrong Iron maiden is a good band, and they wrote songs that are better than some saxon songs,.. but what the hack I'm glad both bands are not dead.. that would be a nightmare wouldnt it?

I really do like both songs. I'm hoping the remainder of the Iron Maiden album keeps it's edge. If Saxon's 'Battering Ram' is any indication, then the rest of
the album should be nothing short of brilliant. Cheers everyone from HOT Texas.

50 50 really. Maybe Maiden by a whisker. But frankly neither are earth shattering

I really like both songs, though I prefer the song Saxon, I think most elaborate, the voice of Biff has more strength and definition. In my opinion if anything characterizes Saxon, is the high level of its members and their excellent teamwork.
