For those of you who are new this has been ongoing for about 12-18 months. We discussed all the Saxon albums and now we are on Maiden.

So what do you think of this.I didnt much to it at the time and i am still not sure. They were fucking great at Monsters of Rock that year As was most the bill.Just ruined by the the sad death of those 2 fans.

This seems to be considered as one of the best (if not the best) Maiden album. But apart from a few songs, I think it's probably their worst! Well, it's my least favourite anyway.

Here in Spain you canīt argue with any Maiden fanatic about that. They think "SSOASS" represents the quintessence of metal epic progressive music.

My opinion: A very good album. It owns some of my favourite Maiden songs like "Infinite dreams", "The prophecy" and "The clairvoyant". Besides, one of their worst songs "Can I play with madness". I hate that song, itīs so cheesy.

Thereīs a couple of hidden treasures: "Moonchild" and the title track, quite epic both.

Two regular songs. Good ones but nothing more nothing less: "Only the good die young" and "The evil that men do" (an absolutely fan favourite here in Spain).

In my top 3 from Dickinson albums with Iron Maiden.

fantastic songs - i love them too

although my favourite maiden tune is "fear of the dark"

virus, clairvoyant, hallowed be thy name, play with madness.... just great metal...

I love this album , I loved the tour, they crammed the same set that filled Birmingham Nec and Wembley Arena, in to the Manchester Appollo the lighting rig seemed to come half way out in to the stalls.

For me they went down hill from this moment.

(Although like you Saxonator I do love the song "FEAR OF THE DARK" )

For me SSOASS was the first Maiden album that dissapointed me. It had some great moments on it (Love the title track), but they all of a sudden started to go prog, and for me lost a lot of the aggression and energy from their sound.
SSOASS was also the first album where the repetative lyrics that have blighted their later years really started to grate on me.

The tour was fantastic though with a great stage show, although looking back Aidrian and Bruces mullets were really horrendous!

I love the album, always have. Its a masterpiece [IMO] alot darker in places than most of the other maiden albums. I really like the production and the guitar/synth/guitar synth balance is perfect, very original sounding and well used throughout.

Bruce's vocals on 7th are among my favourite of any of his recordings, he sings with alot of depth and passion (and of course ability) that just didnt reach me as much as on most other Maiden, recordings.

I think this is when maiden started going down hill. The production isn't very heavy or raw enough, the drums don't sound as powerfull, and the guitars arn't as heavy as on the earlier albums. Just like all the maiden albums of the 90's and 00's, you have to 'pick the bones' out of this one, mabey four of five good songs on each album.......

I think its the use of synths and guitar synths that detracts from the overall heavy sound, but i think it was handled and produced in a positive way that gave Maiden a more dynamic sound for the album which suited its style.
There is still heavyness in there though, especially when played loud enough :D

For me they started going downhill from 'no prayer' onwards, i do like that album but there only really a few stand out tracks. I lost interest more or less completely after 'Fear of the Dark'
